Owl of Athena is a marimba duet crafted to enthrall with its vibrant flair for a concert setting. The piece draws inspiration from a serendipitous encounter with a majestic owl during a crucial rehearsal for a marching band competition. As the owl soared overhead in the twilight, its presence resonated with me, evoking the ancient Greek goddess Athena, known for her strategic prowess and association with the owl, a symbol of protection.

The composition unfolds with a bold sixteenth-note-based theme, characterized by the sonority of recurring perfect fifths. This theme evolves as Marimba 1 introduces a new motif, maintaining an undercurrent of relentless sixteenth notes that propel the piece forward. A contemplative interlude follows, where both marimbas engage in soft rolls, offering a brief respite before accelerating rhythms heighten the intensity. The piece culminates in a return to the initial themes, now in brisk variations, bringing the journey full circle.

Two 5 octave marimbas are ideal, though both parts may be played with 4.5 octave marimbas. Notes outside of the range may be taken up by an octave, and the general effect should remain the same. If only one 5 octave marimba is available, it is preferred that the Marimba 1 player uses it.
