Program Notes
Dragon Rider was born from a collaboration with Mr. Del Hubers of the Brandon Valley Intermediate School in the fall of 2023, who sought a captivating yet accessible piece for his beginner ensemble. After some brainstorming, the initial regal and noble theme that emerged during the creative process sparked the vivid image of courageous riders training to ride dragons into battle, inspiring the title.
The piece commences with a bold introduction of the primary melody before the percussion section disrupts the grandeur, leading to a dirge-like tune performed by the lower instruments. Throughout these moments, glimmers of optimism shine through, reflecting the tenacity and determination of a dedicated individual striving for self-improvement. The main theme reappears in variations, yet never fully reclaims its initial hopeful resonance.
As the composition evolves, variations in dynamics and articulation create a sense of progression, paving the way for a return to the secondary theme. Finally, the piece culminates in a triumphant and hopeful rendition of the main material, symbolizing the exhilarating moment of soaring through the skies atop a magnificent dragon, prepared to conquer any challenge.
I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to contribute Dragon Rider to the repertoire of beginning band music. It is my sincere hope that young musicians will take pleasure in performing this piece and that audiences will delight in the evocative journey it portrays. My heartfelt appreciation extends to Mr. Hubers for entrusting me with this endeavor.
