Program Notes:
This cool, breezy big band chart is inspired by the classic arrangements of played by the Count Basie Orchestra in the 50’s and 60’s to today. An original tune of mine, Sunday Strollin’ uses classic jazz harmony in a pleasing arrangement that’ll put some pep in your step!
For my first published jazz band chart, I wanted to put out something with a classic feel, honoring the arrangements of Sammy Nestico, Quincy Jones, and Nelson Riddle. Going on a walk on Sunday’s is something I love to do; there’s just something about that feeling of the lazy day that makes it a pleasure to walk in the sunshine.
The opening features a classic opening with rhythm section establishing the chord progression, while the piano solos lightly. The melody then comes in in the trumpets, played softly with cup mutes. This then moves to the saxes in a small soli before the entire ensemble takes it over in a powerful, classic swing.
This chart makes use of the full dynamic range all of the big band, with opportunities to play softly and to bring the heat.
Please enjoy this original tune, Sunday Strollin’.
